Ancient Philosophy
Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Stoicism, etc. Ancient Greek philosophy arose in the 6th century BC. Philosophy was used to make sense of the world using reason. It dealt with a wide variety of subjects, including astronomy, epistemology, mathematics, political philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, ontology, logic, biology, rhetoric and aesthetics.
Modern Philosophy
Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, etc. As a historical term, modern philosophy denotes the work of philosophers who lived between the 17th and 19th centuries, particularly in Europe. As for the distinctive approach of these modern philosophers, they can be understood as being focused on one thing above all else: reason.
Contemporary Philosophy
Noam Chomsky, Slavoj Žižek, and others. Contemporary philosophy is the present period in the history of Western philosophy beginning at the early 20th century.
Stoicism
Zeno, Seneca, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius. The teachings of the ancient Stoic philosophers, their texts, and the modern application of their ideas.
Buddhism
Philosophical tradition based on teachings attributed to the Buddha, a wandering teacher who lived in the 6th or 5th century BCE.
Zen
A Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism emphasizing the value of meditation and intuition over endless study and rituals.
Taoism
Taoism (also spelled Daoism) is a philosophy from ancient China that has influenced folk and national belief. Taoism has been connected to the philosopher Lao Tzu, who, around 500 B.C.E., wrote the main book of Taoism, the Tao Te Ching.
Confucianism
The main idea of Confucianism is the importance of having a good moral character, which can affect the world around a person through the idea of cosmic harmony. This moral character is achieved through the virtue of ren, or “humanity,” which leads to more virtuous behaviors, such as respect, altruism and humility.
